Tucked back on Chelsea Avenue less than half a mile from Moravian's north campus is Jumbars, a quaint and cozy restaurant with all the charms of a 1930's hometown diner.
The homey atmosphere is enhanced by the freshly prepared home cooking that makes Jumbars stand out among other cafes and small restaurants.
The breakfast menu offered a variety of options: my company and I ordered omelets, oats, parfaits and French toast.
Jumbars also offers a wide selection of teas including some exotic flavors like melon. Many praise the coffee as perfectly brewed.
My cheese omelet was delicious, and came with the thickest and tastiest piece of wheat toast I have ever eaten. The potatoes were thick slices of red potatoes with the skins still on and were lightly seasoned. The potatoes were not what I would stereotype as breakfast potatoes but tasty nonetheless.
The oats served warm, with or without fresh fruit, could rival that of Granny McCarthy's off of Main Street and the parfait was chock full of delicious fresh fruit.
With such a variety of great food, this is definitely a place to bring a lot of friends and pass around your plate to share and try a bit of everything.
The portion sizes were smaller in comparison to other restaurants, but the meals were filling.
The presentation of the meals was picturesque: brightly colored plates and cups made for a cheerful presentation in addition to the complimentary watermelon slices as garnish.
Breakfast prices were moderate and fair for the great quality of food and attentive service.
The wait staff was attentive but not overly attentive, and that created a perfect environment to chat with good friends while still never having your coffee cup left empty.
One downfall was the wait. Because the food is made to order and everything from the bread is homemade, the wait for one's meal was longer than expected. The quality of food was certainly worth the wait and provided a great opportunity to have a good time with friends and family. Nevertheless, this is certainly not the place to eat if you are in a hurry or on the go.
Another aspect I found a bit strange about Jumbars was that the waiters do not provide the customers with checks, rather when a customer is finished they are expected to proceed to the register and pay there.
Since this was my first time there, I had no idea what the protocol was and waited for a good 10 minutes for a bill that never arrived.
Jumbars is open daily, serving breakfast through dinner except on Sundays when it features a breakfast only menu. It also features both indoor and outdoor dining with a few umbrella-equipped tables located just outside the front door.
