The Skinny on... LinkedIn

Face it: in high school, it was cool to be on MySpace. Then, many of us completed our college orientation by registering for Facebook. Now, as some of us are heading off into the business world, we have a new tool: LinkedIn.
LinkedIn, linkedin.com, is a business-oriented social networking Web site aimed towards professional networking. LinkedIn provides many features similar to Facebook utilizing networks, but includes additional features beneficial for those in the professional world, or about to be.
LinkedIn has more than 25 million professional users from around the world in more than 150 industries. If you're still skeptical, all 500 companies listed in the Fortune 500 are represented at a director-level or above. These are real connections.
Not only do your connections have your name, but they can also view the most prominent portion of LinkedIn's profile: your resume. This allows your connections to not only know who you are, but what you have accomplished in your career. No longer do your connections wonder exactly what it is you do; they know.
LinkedIn recommends several uses for their free service: finding potential clients or employers, reconnecting with former business partners and searching for jobs. This last one is the most crucial to us in this crumbling economy. As commencement gets nearer each week, the thought of stepping out into the professional world gets more and more unnerving.
LinkedIn also provides the ability to search by name, by title, or by company just in case you forgot that special contact you met at an event. And the best part, by adding people to our network, we are able to view their connections as well, the whole beauty of networking:
Looking for a connection in another industry? Perhaps one of your connections knows someone. In this case, LinkedIn offers the option for your connection to introduce the two of you.
LinkedIn also has a system of recommendations for users for each job, in which your coworkers or your supervisor can hail your skills. Glowing reviews sweeten the deal, offering extra weight to your online resume.
For those entering the job market this year or next, and for those of you making connections already at Moravian, now is the time to register for LinkedIn.
