A nice respite from the hectic weekday, South Campus offers an oasis to students with its Coffeehouse in the basement of Main Hall from 9 to 12 every Wednesday night.

The aptly named Coffeehouse serves unlimited coffee, hot chocolate, Kool-Aid and a variety of snacks for only 50 cents. The event also serves as a social interaction scene for not only South Campus students, but North Campus students as well.

The scene at Coffeehouse can be described as a liberal artsy atmosphere, where students are strumming their guitars, debating politics, playing board games and so on.

Since Coffeehouse is located in the basement, it appears to be a somewhat familiar and comforting dive. The coffee is served on an actual bar lined with stools. Tabletops are spread across the room in a clustered fashion creating a maze to move in when Coffeehouse is hopping.

Behind the main café is a lounge with adequate couches, where mini and impromptu concerts are held. A second lounge is to the side of these rooms, with a couple computers where the latest YouTube videos are being presented to onlookers.

Ironically, over half of the students who attend Coffeehouse don't even drink the coffee, but they come for the socialization, as it is a welcomed disruption to one's week.

Taylor Leonard says Coffeehouse is about "talking to everyone who you don't get to talk to because you don't have time."

The coffee at Coffeehouse is nothing special, but I believe that it's a step above diner coffee. The charming baristas offer regular, a special flavor, and decaf coffee. The biggest problem when getting one's coffee is selecting a mug, as there are six stocked shelves displaying them.

Depending on the week, Coffeehouse has a theme to their event, such a PJ night and South of the Border night. Coming up, there's going to be Halloween night, where students are encouraged to dress up for Coffeehouse.

Being that Coffeehouse is hosted down on South Campus, sometimes student run bands play during Coffeehouse, such as the Celtic band, Deaf Leprechaun. Open mike nights are also entertaining, as fellow students sing along to impromptu songs on the piano or guitar.

At times, Coffeehouse can be overly crowded, pushing some of the crowd outside, and at times, there's only a few students around chatting amongst themselves. Either way, the students mostly know each other, and if they don't, odds are that they'll be discussing classes with each other by the end of the night.

The atmosphere is very relaxed, geared toward forgetting about one's work over sipping on some coffee, as Coffeehouse is a break from one's work, because at midnight students slip back into their rooms, caffeinated and ready for reports and homework.
