Letter to the editor: Hope for improvements at Moravian

Issue date: 3/19/09 Section: Opinion
While I do think that the bureaucratic bodies at this college feel they are making the right decision, I can guarantee they are not.
If Moravian wishes to reach its full potential and really concern itself with student needs and desires, then it is necessary that students have more power on campus.
With that said, I feel the following to be necessary:
1) Students should serve on EVERY committee at this college. Moreover, they should have adequate representation. This is our institution and we should have a voice in how it is run.
2) Students should be consulted on important college matters. For instance, budget cuts, contracts, and reformatting the curriculum, etc.
3) There should be more student trustees.
4) Either financial aid should inflate at the same rate of tuition or students should be locked into paying a specific amount for the duration of their education.
5) Students should know how much every employee at Moravian makes.
6) Student workers should be able to get raises.
I do not think any of the previous statements to be in any way unreasonable or even progressive. Many colleges across the nation have already instituted these practices.
I sincerely hope that Moravian has the "cojones" to do what it should have done a long time ago: forget about locos parentis and give students the power they deserve.
